The first ever commencement exercises of Caro National High School, located in Barangay Kapayawan, one of Isabela City’s most interior barangays, was held on June 28, with 17 graduates and 36 completers.
Basilan District 1 Provincial Board Member Hon. Nasser Salain and Isabela City Information Officer Mendry-Ann Lim rendered the graduates with insipirational messages. Both were invited to represent the indigenous peoples of Basilan, the former as Yakan while the latter as Sama-Banguingi. The graduates and completers were challenged to pursue their dreams with education as their means to achieve them. Hon. Salain announced the free college tuition fees at soon-to-be Basilan State University and encouraged everyone to complete their college degree. Meanwhile, Ms. Lim emphasized the local government unit’s support for the education sector through DepEd-Isabela City’s implementation of various programs and services such as the Teledukasyon program, student scholarships, and assistance under Mayor Sitti Djalia A. Turabin-Hataman’s leadership.
DepEd-Isabela City officials were also present, as was the barangay chair of Kapayawan, who was visibly moved during the ceremony. During his congratulatory message, he said in Tausug, “Kamu na in tanda na in hula ta byaun masawa na.” Kapayawan was formerly known as a rebel stronghold in Basilan due to its geographical location.
During the ceremony, a 52-year old man finished his senior high school studies, accompanied by his 89-year old father, who was proud of his son’s accomplishments despite his age. He is also a former MILF member who now believes that education is essential in one’s life.
School Head Ekmar Sakib expressed heartfelt gratitude to the school’s invited guests. “This event is historic because it is the first ever graduation ceremony of the school, which was established last year with the assistance of its former Barangay Captain Ms. Amuda H. Maulana, who donated the lot as the area for the school’s construction,” he said.
Caro National High School currently has 202 students in Grades 7 through 12, as well as 9 regular faculty members and 6 volunteer teachers.
