The City of Isabela de Basilan is proud to be in solidarity with the global movement of Muslim women in celebrating World Hijab Day (WHD) every February 01. No less than Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman during her term as Anak Mindanao party-list representative in the House of Representatives filed House Bill 968 in 2014 to establish a National Hijab Day to raise awareness on the religious, cultural, and social significance of wearing the hijab in Islam in the light of persistent misconceptions and prejudice against it.
As defined in the said bill, a hijab as “a veil that covers the head and chest, worn by a Muslim female beyond adolescence in the presence of adult males outside of their immediate family,” although it can also refer to any head, face, or body covering.
On its 10th year, WHD embraces the theme “Hijab is Our Crown, Not a Crime” to highlight how “At times when Muslim women struggle with hijab ban in public and workplace in some countries, and are being targeted and harassed verbally and physically in a variety of circumstances, it is important for our community to come together and stand in solidarity in the fight against systemic anti-Muslim bigotry.”
More than tolerance, the City of Isabela de Basilan commits to respect and acceptance as foundations of a future that guarantees a happy and dignified life for all.
